?Brooklyn native Steven Van Patten is the author of the critically acclaimed Brookwater’s Curse trilogy, about an 1860s Georgia plantation slave who becomes law enforcement within the vampire community. In contrast, the titular character in his Killer Genius series is a modern day hyper-intelligent black woman who uses high-end technology as a socially conscious serial killer. SVP’s short fiction includes contributions to horror anthologies like Hell’s Kitties, Shopping List 4 and the Stoker Award nominated New York State of Fright. A collection of short horror and dark fiction stories entitled Hell At The Way Station, published by his Laughing Black Vampire Productions publishing company and co-authored by acclaimed storyteller, Marc Abbott hit shelves in 2019. Along with a plethora of other honors and accolades, SVP won three African-African-American Literary Awards in 2019, two for Hell At The Way Station (Best Anthology and Best In Science Fiction) and one for Best Independent Publisher. Robert Pitre is the President of Skyline Ranch/Pitre V Auto/Life Guide for America, which is the first Black-owned auto dealership in Dallas. Pitre V Auto has been in business for over 42 years, selling new and used cars to the public from its location at 2642 S. Harwood. In 1993, Robert Pitre purchased a 90-acre ranch in southern Dallas, using it for horseback riding and teaching boys how to ride horses to keep them out of trouble. The ranch is open to the public and hosts events such as relay races and horseback riding. Robert and his wife Penney also donate toys and clothes to families every Christmas. Skyline Ranch now includes an event hall, a pool, and horseback riding. Located near the University of North Texas at Dallas and the Dallas Area Rapid Transit light rail blue line, the ranch is a popular venue for weddings, quinceaneras, reunions, concerts, and corporate events. They offer various packages and a rental-only option and provide discounts for full-package rentals on Fridays and Sundays, as well as off-season rates. Additionally, 10% of their earnings go toward helping at-risk and special needs kids, with 5,000 kids benefiting from their services annually.

Part 1: Close Up Radio Spotlights Velma McMillan of Blo Blow Dry Bar

Rockwall, TX – Velma McMillan is the owner of three Blo Blow Dry Bar franchise locations – Rockwall, TX, McAllen, TX, and Bristol, VA. Along with her husband, she sells personal auto insurance through their company, Quantum Alliance. For the two upcoming shows, she will focus on Blo Blow Dry Bar.
“Blo Blow Dry Bar is a hair salon where you go in and you get your hair washed and styled – no cut and color,” explains Velma. “We also can do make up.”
“It’s a one stop shop,” adds Velma. “If you are going to a big event or have an evening out on the town, and you want your hair and makeup done, it takes forty-five minutes to do your hair and forty-five minutes to do your makeup. You then just put on your clothes and go. It’s quick in-and-out service.” Also, services can be performed remotely by members. She prefers NOT to call her staff employees, but instead members.
She also involves her family in this business. One of her sons is the Chief Style Boss at their Rockwall, TX location, while her other son handles social media. “My purpose is to make a legacy for my kids and grandkids,” notes Velma.
Velma also likes to give back to the community as Blo Blow Dry Bar is a proud member of each Chamber of Commerce where her franchises are located. Having already been featured in Vogue and Vanity Fair, she came from nothing and built these businesses from the ground up, she is the first franchisee to open three locations within a twelve-month period.
Ultimately, she plans to establish at least twenty franchises.
