40 Acres and A Mule -Then What?

    in Politics Progressive

This week, noted journalist and educator, Ta-Nehisi Coates, challenged Democratic presidential candidates on the issue of reparations to African-Americans for the tragic outcomes of slavery with his recent article for The Atlantic and asked Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders if he was in favor of reparations. The article and Bernie Sanders’ response has created a firestorm that Down South and Dirty will take a bit further.
Join us this Sunday, January 24th, for a lively discussion based on the premise, “Okay, what would happen IF we got reparations?” If you’re a regular DSD listener, you know how it goes on the DSD porch; we’re going to ask hard questions and ask ourselves and our listeners to think about this very controversial issue that the African-American community has debated for years. As usual, we will have our Bern Treatment with DSD correspondent Anoa Changa who was on the ground this week at the Bernie rally in Birmingham, AL; Stacey and Scout will chop up somebody or something in our weekly Dirty List and we’ve got guest commentators joining us for the reparations discussion. So, make plans to call in at (657) 383-0995 and become a healthy part of the conversation! We ask callers to please limit remarks to two minutes, so we can keep the tea flowing.
See you this Sunday at 2pm EST on Down South and Dirty Radio!

BK Irons, Conscious Comic, on "Racism: Alive and Well" & Racial Healing

    in Politics Progressive

In what will become an ongoing overall conversation & a series of conversations, Barbara, Bram & The Social Spitball Show have committed to have guests on Racial Healing and related topics at least once a month. For the second in our "Racial Healing" series, we have the honor of hosting featured guest BK Irons. BK is what he calls a "Conscious Comic," in that his humor awakens the consciousness of his audience on matters of great importance. It is in this spirit that BK recorded and produced a video called "Now That I Have Your Attention."
This video (the audio of which was played during Dixon White's appearance on our show) addresses the very real timeline of the black experience in America from the point-of-view of a black male through history. We will play this again during this episode. As with most issues that matter, there is of course a black female experience as well. With Madison Paige and other previous guests calling in, we are sure to get their perspective in a very long journey to equality and, simply, human recognition. Please join BK Irons on this very important subject that needs to be brought to light over and over and over again. You will be better for it..I promise. I am very grateful for the opportunity. Barbara & I can't wait to get this conversation going...

The WV Democratic Primary - What Just Happened? (Replay)

    in Politics Progressive

In the first half-hour, Natalie Ferdinand Twigger comes to us as a hard-line Hillary supporter from Ranson, WV. She has some strong opinions on the election and on Hillary Clinton. Here are her words:
"The reason why like Hillary is that for many years she has fought for women's rights, Children's Rights, Civil Rights and LGBT Rights. I've wanted Hillary for so many reasons: because she is a fighter; she is a champion; she is a great person; she fights for everyone. She has so much compassion for everyone - not just for Democrats but also for Rep's and Ind's - for everyone, including illegal immigrants and I know that she is very qualified in Foreign Policy. We have got to get her in the White House. I also can't say enough about how much she does for gun violence and gun control. It means so much to me how much she does for that and talks about it and represents gun control. Republicans are very mistaken to think that we Democrats have have it in our minds to take away their guns. No! She just wants to get rid of the loopholes."
Our second half brings us to Charlotte Pritt. Charlotte is an educator, businesswoman, and politician in the U.S. state of West Virginia. From 1984 to 1988, she served in the West Virginia House of Delegates. From 1988 to 1996, she served in the West Virginia State Senate. In 1996, she ran as a Democrat for governor and lost narrowly, but made history as the first woman to secure the West Virginia gubernatorial nomination of either of the two major political parties. From 2012 to 2014, she was Chairwoman of the Mountain Party which is the West Virginia Green Party affiliate. Today, she is the president of Better Balance, a West Virginia-based educational and wellness consulting firm.
