Suspensions from school are usually the last resort, the result of disruptive, destructive behavior that prompts school officials to send a child home and request that the child stay there until parents can come up to school for a conference. But generally, this type of punishment is reserved for older children who have the ability to think rationally. How does one handle a preschooler? Statistics show that more and more preschoolers are being kicked out of school by frustrated teachers. Is this the appropriate way to handle a 4 year old who misbehaves? Or are teachers lacking in patience and skills? Or are today's children suffering from serious neurological problems that transcend mere "disobedience?" This week we'll discuss the behavior of young children, and what measures can be taken to prevent the "school to prison" pipeline that seems to be starting as early as preschool.
