Rouhana, to discuss her book, "When the Fudge Trees Bloom: Memories of an American in the Middle East." About Our Guest:
Catherine W. Rouhana, a Baltimore native and second of 10 children, embarked on a unique life journey. Meeting her husband Nagib in college, they closed their Polish interest bookstore when his role at the World Bank led to a position in Saudi Arabia. Living in Saudi Arabia and Lebanon during the late ’70s and early ’80s, the couple faced the perils of political involvement and the challenges of war.
In 1986, Catherine moved back to the U.S. with her children, while Nagib remained in the Middle East. Over 18 years, she chronicled her experiences, learning about writing, publishing, and herself. Despite the international separation, family unity remained crucial.
Catherine’s upcoming memoir reflects a life shaped by love, international adventures, and the enduring strength of family bonds amidst geopolitical complexities.

Break Self: Feed with Gabrielle Myers
in Poetry
Break Self: Feed with Gabrielle Myers
Break Self: Feed meditates on eroticism and relationships with searing language play. The poems sing of our ecosystems, their human threats, and possible cures based on nourishment and barrier fracture. In eco-poetic lyrics, borderlands and boundaries evolve in reference to a deep connection with the natural world that surrounds us with its seasonal shifts and the impacts of climate change. We never know when abundance and satiation will come. We spend so much time preparing for devastation and desiccation, so much energy we waste planning our ruin. Break Self: Feed repurposes that drive, energy, and time towards preparing for our proliferation, our unfurling, our living into our potential. Dig into the soil, feel fine-webbed roots working out their networks of nutrient pull and harvest. Let’s mimic the roots’ motion to gather, see what we can get out of the perfect soil, set ourselves on expansion, lengthening, growth.
Gabrielle is a writer, professor, and chef. Her memoir, Hive-Mind, published in 2015, details her time of love, awakening, and tragic loss on an organic farm. Her first poetry book, Too Many Seeds, was published in 2021. Her third poetry book, Points in the Network, is forthcoming from Finishing Line Press.

Close Up Radio Spotlights Carey MacCarthy of START UP! Art Therapy
in Art
San Rafael, CA - Art and music are powerful tools of healing, self-discovery, and self-expression. Carey MacCarthy, MA, ATR, LPCC, Registered Art Therapist, Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor has dedicated her life to using this powerful trauma treatment modality to help children and adults heal from trauma.
As a prominent Art Therapist in the field since 2001, Carey began her career working in the front lines in psychiatric hospitals, treating patients with bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, depression, and dissociative identity disorder, then transitioned into Neurorehabilitation within a physical rehabilitation hospital treating stroke victims. There, she developed a protocol that helped rewire the brain from paralysis in just 3 weeks.
In 2014, Carey founded START UP! Art Therapy and moved to the Native American reservations to bring her START UP! Art Therapy Whole Brain Healing System™, a Neurodevelopmental Art Therapy Trauma Treatment training program to tribal schools and behavioral health organizations to heal trauma and break the cycle of Intergenerational and historical trauma.
“The START UP! Art Therapy Whole Brain Healing System™ also develops the nervous system, which is crucial for optimal brain function and mental health and is the foundational building block for learning academia, and memory retention, especially when we are talking about Native American People restoring lost language. It is imperative to optimize children’s brains to learn their language,” explains Carey.
“We’re currently working on new programs for adults and adult trauma,” explains Carey.

Have You Met Her? Mary Brotherton That Is
in Books
After years of writing and editing for other's, seeing my name on their mastheads, I took a break in 2012 to become my mother's caregiver. When she crossed over two years later, I thought I could step back into the same path I'd walked for much of my career. Life threw me a curve. In 2018, I joined other professionals to create bUneke. At bUneke (be unique), we provide a free, educational publication that highlights people doing amazing things to make our world better. Since then, we have featured more than 3,000 charities, philanthropic businesses, and individuals who are working today to change tomorrow. I still write and edit as a freelancer, as time permits. bUneke is my passion and if you want to be a part of the movement, we welcome you to join us! I published my first book in 2022, after working on it for 40 years. My second book was released in the spring of 2023, after only 90 days from the first thought to the last page. A third book was inspired by a conversation with another author. Now, I am looking to rejoin the workforce and contribute to an organization that can make an impact on the world, rather than just my little corner of it.
