Americans: Who are we? What made us who we are? Are we changing?

All "Americans" have been told we are the greatest country on earth. Just this past week President Obama himself said and I quote, "We are the greatest nation on earth."

Is this statement true? If so what makes us the greatest country on earth? 

Over the past few years people around the globe have made comments that American has changed. America is not the country that we use to be. Many say America is a greedy, self serving, bully. How can that be?

What have we done to earn these type of comments? What can we do to change people's minds? Do we need to to anything?
