Some men are adventurous; some curious; some introverted; some afraid of their potential.  If or how we meet those responsibilities defines to others, who we are and what kind of person we be.

There is no shortage of sage advice to guide the hapless initiate to a lodge.  There is a bumper crop of advisors ready to persuade us that achievement is just a state of mind. Quick fix; ready made false hope.

If we want to believe improvement comes easy when we dress for the occasion, then we will end in despair; that elements of science and philosophy have been gathered into coherent pamphlets and books to be left on a shelf; we- every last one of us are abandoning the skills of the old craftsman.

Freemasonry can no more open a closed mind than it can inject awareness into a mind.  If it was one man, pulling away from his duty as a mason we could probably handle that. But this is more. It is the question of conscience that has command. What to do?  Change our thinking and we change the outcome.

Are we initiating far more people than we can teach? Probably. It would accounts for the demit blizzard that is going on. It is painful to watch degree mill masons stumble, become lost and leave. Perhaps we want the ubiquitous bad stranger to tell us we are not what we claim but he is telling us something we already knew.

Silence is the sound of a mason thinking. If you are the traveller as claimed, it is silence we need to find our path out.
