Sakina U'huru

Sakina O’Uhuru, CM MS, has been practicing the art of midwifery for sixteen years. She has been providing maternal child health care in underserved areas for twenty-nine years. Ms. O’Uhuru serves as a licensed midwife in the states of New York and New Jersey. She held the position of Site Director/Director of Midwifery Services from 1999 to 2004 for one of the first clinics to offer out-of-hospital prenatal care in an underserved community in New York City. Ms O’Uhuru is a clinical preceptor for SUNY Downstate Midwifery Program, Stony Brook, Columbia Midwifery Program and NYU Midwifery Program. She has also provided instructional classes and workshops for a variety of educational institutions. Ms. O’Uhuru has appeared as a guest speaker at the Art of Birthing, the Northern Manhattan Perinatal Partnership, the National Association of Childbearing Centers, Bronx Talk, Oxygen with Gayle King, Ethiopian Midwifery Conference 2000 and for Ethiopian television. In addition, Ms. O’Uhuru has been featured in several articles and in two independent film documentaries entitled Home Delivery by Christine Tournadre (2006)and Bringin’ in da Spirit by Rhonda L. Haynes (2003). She was also featured on TV’s Discovery Channel in Amazing Birth Stories. Ms. O’Uhuru is a master’s graduate of SUNY Downstate Midwifery Program and a graduate of the City College Sophie Davis Biomedical Physician Assistant Program at Harlem Hospital. In 2002, she founded her private practice, Gentle Spirit Midwifery Women’s Health Service, which offers comprehensive women’s health-care services. Gentle Spirit is a private practice independently owned and operated, with two office locations in New York and in New Jersey. Ms. O’Uhuru has attended well over five hundred out-of-hospital births for women in the NY/NJ metropolitan area.
