W. Joseph Stegner is a 2-time survivor of subarachnoid hemorrages. The first was when he was pre-teen and the second was almost 40 years later when he was an adult after several years of working as a 9-1-1 Paramedic in N. CA. As an emergency medical tech, he spent years dealing with the immediate aftermath of a variety of incidents. Because of his work as a trauma-care specialist, he knew immediately what to do for himself after this unexpected hemorrhage, so he had the best chance of recovery. During the time period between his two personal traumas, he watched a friend of his recover from a brain injury. He was able to see, for the first time, what these 9-1-1 patients of his actually appeared like to the outside world. In his spare time, as a creative outlet to see the outside world better, Joseph composes poetry.
