Don Burk ..

Childhood: Carbondale, IL , blue collar home, roofers, pot belly coal stove, 3 brothers, hunted & fished for food. Teens: moved to Chicago, 3 yrs, suburbs 1.5 yrs. Began roofing at 13. Moved back to So. IL, parents split, brothers split, on the street at 17. Finished H.S. 1 yr college, older and 1 younger brother both in Marines. Joined Marines 1976, got blind, cut off part of thumb, still went in. Platoon Sgt. in Boot and assigned Admin, Mngt Info Systems. Assigned Cherry Point, made Sgt., Personnel Chief, maxed pft's, expert shot. No hazardous duty. EAS'd, BA, MBA. Did consulting for the Army Corps of Engineers, taught college classes, owned a business or two, own rental property. Landed at state job Dept. of Human Services where I help people daily. 2 sons, 20 and 17, doing well, and Mary, my wife, still w/me somehow. I spend my free time helping Brothers and Sisters, area support groups and Habitat for Humanity. And I write original poetry and occasional short stories.
