Ethiopia had been one of the few states to survive "the scramble for Africa" by the major European powers in the late 19th century. Both Italy and Ethiopia were members of the League of Nations, founded in 1920. Italy was a founding member and Ethiopia joined 28 September 1923.The Abyssinia Crisis 1935-1936 was sparked by the Wal Wal Incident. Italy had expanded her area of influence in Africa by building the Wal Wal Fort in Abyssinian territory in 1930. In 1934 a skirmish as Abyssinian troops attempted to take control of the fort.The Chaldean Cushitic language was thought to be related to old Egyptian, or today's Beja or Somali languages.  These Chaldeans established the dynasty represented by Nebuchadnezzar, who took the Judeans into exile.  When the Chaldeans took over the old Assyrian domains, they continued to use the Assyrian Empire's Semitic language of Aramaic as the language of administration.The east coast of Africa was part of a huge trade network, driven largely by the gold of Great Zimbabwe and extending as far as China. The trading partners of the coastal Swahili were Arabs and Persians. Many coastal rulers had converted to Islam; Christianity held little allure.Ethiopia is mentioned variously in every major division of the Hebrew Bible and used interchangeably with Cush,13 and it was later identified with Nubia and Aksum. In its broader sense, the name Aethiopia should not be equated with Ethiopia of today which was designated in 1885.The name "Ethiopia" (Hebrew Kush) is mentioned in the Bible numerous times (thirty-seven times in the King James version), and is in many ways considered a holy place.
