Welcome to TECH Talk, Texas Style, broadcasting from the offices of TECH Fort Worth.

Today, we’re talking to Dr. Joe Barrera, Director of the Shimadzu Institute for Research Technologies. Dr. Barrera earned his doctorate in cell and molecular biology from The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in 2009. Most recently, he was a postdoctoral fellow in UT Southwestern’s department of pediatrics.

The Shimadzu Institute for Research Technologies was established February 28th, 2013 as a result of the partnership between the University of Texas at Arlington and the Shimadzu Corporation through a record donation worth $7.5M. It is comprised of multiple instrumentation facilities, each with a different research focus, and operated under the “centralized research resources” model. This holistic and interdisciplinary approach is crucial in driving leading-edge research with a major impact on scientific study and entrepreneurship. Each center is staffed with appropriate expertise, bringing an additional level of accessibility that traditionally has not existed in research facilities.
