"And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth." Gen. 1:28
I picture Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. They are young, alive with enthusiasm for the new world around them, daily discovering with delight the wonders of God's handiwork, marveling and rejoicing in the diverse beauty and intricate patterns of life around them.
I, however, wake up, shower and dress, kiss my spouse and kids good-bye and head out for another day at work. I return home each evening and my "other" job begins: I clean or fix those things that need my attention, take care of the yards, pay the bills, help with homework-anything I can do to be a loving partner to my spouse and to be a good parent to my children.
Don't get me wrong- I love my life and all the challenges it brings. but in the hustle and bustle of daily life, I miss that raw pleasure of discovering the world around me. I forget that the same intricate beauty that awed Adam and Eve is at my fingertips too. Instead, every night, I pull the covers over my head, sleep a heavy sleep and prepare for another day.
