Tonight’s show is called, “The Psychology of Advertising & Marketing.

Your average person rarely if ever stops to think about just how pervasive advertising and marketing are in their daily lives and our pop culture. We are not merely talking about a cartoon animal on television, telling you what toilet paper to buy. Marketing has changed our holiday traditions as a culture (the Coke Santa Claus), our relationships, our gestures of love and friendship (such as greeting cards or engagement rings), how we dress, where & how we work, our cars, our homes… it is difficult to think of an aspect of our lives that has not been changed in some meaningful way by things we learned from ads and being marketed to.

Tonight’s topic will not only address these sorts of things, but the history of modern marketing and advertising, why we respond to it, and how to break that cycle if it is sucking into buying and doing things that are not what you really want.

Tonight, we will discuss:

  1. AN OVERVIEW OF MARKETING AND ADVERTISING, INCLUDING THEIR HISTORIES.
  2. TACTICS USED IN MARKETING AND ADVERTISING, AND WHY WE FEEL COMPELLED TO RESPOND TO THEM
  3. HOW ADVERTISING AND MARKETING BIAS AND AFFECT US
  4. HOW TO KEEP FOCUSED ON WHAT YOU WANT, NOT WHAT COMPANIES WANT YOU TO WANT

We'll start off the evening with some topic-relevant Classic Rock played by Dr. Mathis, followed by Classic Rock trivia, in "The Rock & Roll Shrink Recalls," followed by our topic discussion.
