Traditionally, families and friends gather in the evening to read the Haggadah, an ancient work derived from the Mishnah. The Haggadah contains the narrative of the Israelite & Hebrew exodus from Egypt, special blessings and rituals, commentaries from the Talmud, and Passover songs.

The Seder is performed by a community or by multiple generations of a family, retelling of the story of the liberation of the Israelites & Hebrews from slavery in ancient Egypt. This story is in the Book of Exodus. The Seder itself is based on the Biblical verse commanding Jews to retell the story of the Exodus from Egypt: "You shall tell your child on that day, saying, 'It is because of what the LORD did for me when I came out of Egypt.'" (Exodus 13:8). In the Book of Jeremiah, the Restoration of Israel is foretold "Therefore behold, days are coming," declares the LORD, "when it will no longer be said, 'As the LORD lives, who brought up the Children of Israel out of the land of Egypt, But, The LORD liveth, that brought up the Children of Israel from the land of the north, and from all the lands whither he had driven them: and I will bring them again into their land that I gave to their fathers." (Jeremiah 16:14-15)
