Educating our Children Through Concepts Rather Than Following Books

What would it take to get the people to stop following others?  How can we expect our children to be leaders when we tecah them to follow?  Do you want a child capable of memorizing random facts out-of-context or a child who self-leads?

What is the role of education to society?  Is it to protect the children and the future?  Are we doing so with the public education system?  Do we have teachers following administrators and children following books that offer little self-leadership skills?
