SELLING SICKNESS: PEOPLE BEFORE PROFITS

If I told you that hospitals make more money for complications, X-rays, and extra time in the ICU would you believe it? Believe it; Dr. Marty MaKary M.D. in his book “UNACCOUNTABLE” claims that a national study estimated that a hospital gets paid $10,000 extra per surgical complication. Would you believe that back surgery is the most profitable areas in modern medicine?  You got it…….A doctor makes a whopping $15,000-$20,000 in a day.  I would say that it’s nothing wrong with making money doing what you were trained to do. The problem comes when hospitals compensate doctors on an “eat-what-you-kill” basis, giving them higher year-end bonus.  Don’t believe me: Read the book.

Kim Witczak has joined others in planning a great conference in Washington, D.C that will bring together academic medical reformers, consumer activists, and health journalists to examine the current scope of disease mongering and to develop strategies and coalitions for change. The conference will  include topics pertaining to disease-mongering such as: misleading marketing; ethics in professional education; journalistic standards; social media; over-treatment; new models for drug development and testing; whistle-blowers; new conflict of interest areas; health screening policies and the impact on public health and pocketbook.
