We might as well deal right at the beginning with the time of Christ's return -- the most controversial aspect of our Lord's second coming. Few, if any, Christian scholars do not recognize the fact of His coming again to this earth. The main controversy surrounds the subject of when He will return, and that includes whether He will come for His church (all Christian believers) at one point in the future and then come for everyone else at a later date, or if He will come for His church and all other believers at the same time in a general resurrection at the beginning of the millennial kingdom.
It is imperative to point out that fine Christians are to be found on almost all sides of this issue. It is also important to realize that while we can be dogmatic about such doctrines as the virgin birth, the deity of our Lord, the inerrancy of the Scriptures, the need to be born again, salvation by grace through faith, and certain other doctrines -- including the fact of our Lord's second coming -- this does not mean we can be totally dogmatic about the time of His coming. The Bible gives many details associated with Christ's second coming throughout the prophetic passages of Scripture, many of which have given rise to different interpretations in that the events involved are located at different times. Thus we should have respect for those who hold a position that is different from our own....
