The thing about it is that you feel like your mental state is at stake. It could be a love interest with someone dangerous, or a job that pays well.

If you stay, you'll feel good about things in the short run. Things like pleasures of the flesh. You know that eventually, things are going to fall apart badly. You may already see it, but it feels kinda good.

If you leave too soon, you may feel like you missed an opportunity to experience full satisfaction and a chance to turn it all around.
