In 1893, poet Katharine Lee Bates penned the words to America the Beautiful in a setting of a poem. After it was published in a weekly newspaper called The Congregationalist, it was set to music by composer S. A. Ward and is now one of the best-known songs in American history. There is great hope that one day soon, America the Beautiful will replace The Star-Spangled Banner and become our official national anthem.
