Before Tina Fey, Oprah and Lucy Ball there was Gertrude Berg. Gertrude Berg, wrote and starred in the very popular series The Goldbergs. Audiences first heard Molly Goldberg in 1929 on radio. The Goldbergs, ran for 17 years chronicling the life of a Jewish family in Brooklyn. As Molly Goldberg she created a positive image of a Jewish mother and her family during decades of American anti-Semitism. In 1949, Gertrude transitioned the radio show into one of the first character driven TV sitcoms. It became a giant national hit. In the 40’s and 50’s, Gertrude Berg became a one-woman media empire. At that time, she and Eleanor Roosevelt were the 2 most recognized and wealthiest women in America. Aviva Kempner has created a fascinating documentary, Yoo-Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg, about the genius of Gertrude Berg. Join us tomatoes on blog talk radio on Wednesday, September 22 at 1 PM EST/ 10 AM PST when we interview Aviva Kempner about her fascinating documentary on the life of the multi-talented Gertrude Berg.
