The village raises a child and a criminal in much the same way. What differentiates between a person becoming a criminal, a superstar, or an average Joe is the village’s response to the person during childhood. Both micro-level and macro-level factors are related to criminal behavior. Micro-level factors include biology, personality, and parental and peer influences. Macro-level factors include the influences of human service systems. Micro-level factors were briefly reviewed in this chapter because they are important and the public generally pays more attention to them than macro-level factors. However, the purpose of It Takes A Village To Raise A Criminal! is to shine the search light on the role of five human service systems in creating criminals: education, child welfare, mental health, criminal justice, and religion. Join The Ugly Facts With Dr. Jenn as we consider these facts one by one.
