Tolerance; are our differences holding us back

The saying goes, our differences is what makes this country great. Many can argue that our differences is what's slowing down progress in this country. Have we grown as a nation when it comes to accepting others as they are, working together for a better society. Or are we stuck? Demanding things of others to make us feel good.
