Independent Black schools arose in the 1970s as an answer to the absence of motivational, culturally relevant instruction for African American students. Over time, those students, grounded in a strong sense of identity and purpose, went on to excel in all areas of life. Chicago's Institute of Positive Education is celebrating 45 years of success in creating a new breed of African American professionals dedicated to bringing knowledge, skills and resources back to the community in order to transform the lives of others. Some of the organizations founders and students discuss the benefits of culturally relevant education and how it makes the difference between failure and success.
