Back in the day if smebody stuck out their hand for you to shake it and you didn't seethem do it or you declined to shake their hand, we would say that you left them hanging. It not only meant that you we'ren't on the same page with them, but it also meant that you weren't on their side. It was a sign of disrespect.

This is just an example, but there are many ways to sell a person out or leave them hanging. You may stand them up for a date or not speak up for them when someone is dissing them. You may run from a fight that they are in instaed of defending them or helping them fight.

Nobody likes to be left hanging but if you leave someone else hanging then you don't really reserve the right to complain if it happens to you.
