Understanding the Research and the Potential Impact in Juvenile Court: Differences Between Youth and Adults

Research has demonstrated that young people are biologically, psychologically, and socially, different than adults. In cases ranging from Graham, to J.D.B. to the recent Miller v. Alabama, the Supreme Court has recognized the merits of these differences in a variety of contexts. On this Spotlight on Youth, Dr. Antoinette Kavanaugh will talk about the behavioral consequences of these differences, highlighting research on adolescent brain development. Given this research, Dr. Kavanaugh will also discuss how juveniles are particularly susceptible to false or coerced confessions and provide an overview of reforms in that area.
