Michael Charles Givens was a ten year veteran of the Oakland, CA. police department before falling into the deep hole of drug addiction. For years he toiled in obscurity and eventually in and out of jails and became a shopping cart pushing, under the freeway dwelling crack addict. While pushing a shopping cart one day, his heart stopped because of the drugs he regularly used. He awakened three months later after an induced coma in the intensive care unit at Summit Hospital with a scar on his chest indicative of the open heart surgery he had undergone. He was later told that he nearly died on the operating table.

That was the turning point in his life. Today he offers support to recovering addicts and has started what has been called the best recovery group on facebook, Hope Fiends

.

Mr. Givens has written two books. "The Dopeless Hope Fiend" is Mr. Givens' story. It is an inspirational chronology of his journey to recovery. His second book "Words" is a collection of poetry and short stories written by Mike. Both are available on amazon.com and many other on book sellers.
