Tonight’s show is called, “Responsibility, Accountability, Blame, and Change. This topic came about because of a 2017 social media event in the UK, where a 14-year-old girl committed suicide, and her father blamed social media for it. There has been recent news coverage due to some recent activity on the situation regarding Facebook being confronted with this case. We will be reading that article in its entirety and discussing the implications tonight.

To be clear, we absolutely are NOT saying that this situation is not tragic and horrible. What we ARE saying is that we want to help our listeners understand the psychology of, when humans are confronted with painful, difficult, and/or tragic situations, we frequently default to looking for some outside source to blame, that we can punish to make ourselves feel better. We ARE saying that the problem is not that simple.

Tonight, we will discuss:

  1. Defining Responsibility, Accountability, Blame, and Change
  2. The Molly Russell case in the UK in 2017
  3. Taking personal responsibility for what situations you choose to act on.
  4. Responsibility for what children access, as well as teaching them to process bad things.
  5. Why we do not want to take ownership of things
  6. Why sometimes we are NOT responsible for things that OTHER PEOPLE do. (such as suicide)
  7. When pathologies or other conditions impair our ability to exercise responsibility and adjustment.
  8. Why making major changes in how we act is so difficult
  9. Conclusions
