When the Civil War started, the men of color joined the War effort from throughout the border communities. The United States Colored Troops (USCT) came to the forefront with the movie Glory, about the 54th Massachusetts. Other units and unsung heroes fought for the freedom of friends, relatives, and people they had never met. They were the soldiers of the United States Colored Troops. They had a lot to lose if the Union did not prevail. Free Blacks joined the USCT from as far away as Canada. Their mission was clear to put an end to slavery.
