Cinco de Mayo is a celebration held on May fifth, commemorating the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. As Time magazine remarked, "The Puebla victory came to symbolize unity and pride for what seemed like a Mexican David defeating a French Goliath." It helped establish a much-needed sense of national unity and patriotism.
