Jesus grew up in a land that was occupied and controlled by the Roman Empire. The Romans frequently executed criminals on crosses, so Jesus knew what it meant to be crucified. Jesus had warned His followers that He would be crucified. He knew that He was to be the perfect sacrifice for the atonement of sins. That sacrificial act would provide eternal salvation for all who would believe in Him.
