Recently some Christian and Muslim leaders have decried the growing popularity of Yoga. Southern Baptist Seminary President, Albert Mohler stated that "the idea that the body is a vehicle for reaching consciousness with the divine" is fundamentally at odds with Christian teaching. The same exact reason was given in a Fatwa issued by Malaysia's top Islamic body in 2008. It states that teachings such as the uniting of a human with God is not consistent with Islamic philosophy. The Vaishnava Vedic conclusion is the exact opposite. According to the Vaishnava view the human body is the most valuable form of life for the very reason that it is meant to develop unity with God. We were created in the likeness of God in order to better relate with God. The words Yoga and Religion both mean to 'link' 'unite' and to 'connect'. Rather than a threat to other religions, Hindu-based Yoga is a clear reminder that any and all religion that serves to unite the lover with its beloved ie God and the worshiper is truly one and the same. 'Hindu' Yoga is thus a reminder of a time before the 'World of Faith' was divided and broken up into various denominations. Also in this week's News section hear an overview of President Obama's recent India visit and its significance for the world.
