What would inspire a Dutch mother of five bright-eyed children to move her family to the "promised land" of America? She already had a lifetime of travel behind her, having lived in Asia and traveled to the Middle East and Africa, as well as having lived a year in Texas. In her travels, she survived a wealth of circumstances that would usually not occur to one person in a lifetime, from living months in the Sinai Desert with nothing more than the clothes on her back — not even shoes. She survived an unknowing bathing episode in shark-infested waters off the Ivory Coast. She survived giving birth to her first child in a Chinese hospital where the nurses told her to leave because the hospital was full.
