Welcome to Global Health Leadership. This is Dr. Elvira Beracochea. This is our first show and I am very excited to welcome you to our show. My name is Dr. Elvira Beracochea. The show is about Global Health Leadership. As you know, the world is going through so many changes. These are difficult times, there is the recession, and recovery and there is a lot of fear out there about "What is going to happen" and "How is this going to affect me and my country". I hope in this program, we can really learn more about how we can work together, and make the world a healthier place and maybe fulfill our job on this planet, which is to be the leader that we always were meant to be. My name is Dr. Elvira Beracochea, I will be your host and I am delighted to welcome you to the show, and I hope to hear all your questions and comments. As you know, I am a global health expert. I have been working in international health for many, many years -- I won't say how many. I believe that health professionals in developing countries and every country around the world are playing a very important role. Not only to change how health is practiced in their own countries, but the impact they have in their country and in the people around them, in their future colleagues and present colleagues, in their own families, and in their communities. I believe that everybody is really meant to play a very big role and have a very big impact. The only thing is that most people do not know how. And I have spent my whole life figuring out what really does make a difference. Why is it that makes people be able to really fulfill their will, make a difference, impact the life of so many people and then fulfill their career as a health professional to the fullest and that is what brought me to really study.
If you know a little bit about my background, you know I am a physician. When I first graduated from medical school, I went to study neurology. I was rather fascinated by the human brain and how it works and how it makes us do things and how it stops us from doing other things. So I studied that very much and then I realized that I was not helping people, that was fascinating but I was not helping as many people and that was one of the main drive for me to really go and help people. And in the process help myself because it is in the giving that we receive. That is one of the main lessons, even from my patients I have always received so much more. That is one of the main lessons I have learned in my 30-year practice of medicine. The satisfaction of having done my best and have made somebody's life a little bit easier and I wish that to every health professionals. So if these things resonate with you. If you're a health professional working in the US, so working at development country in Africa, in Asia and anywhere in the world, and I want you to know that if you have in me somebody who understands what is to strive to have a career to make a difference and that I am here to share my experience, so really you can become the global health leader that you were meant to be. So I hope this program will encourage others to join us and to really put the issue of becoming a leader on the table and do all we can so that we can it happen. In this show, I want to talk a little bit about myself, and then I am going to take your questions. So if you are out there and you want to talk a little bit about your coming year, please do so. In fact, you can join us next week. I will be here every Friday, from 12 to 1 in Washington, Eastern Time in the US and I look forward to helping you in any way I can.
Just to tell you a little bit about me, I have been practicing medicine for almost 30 years now and I am a mom, I am a doctor, and I also have a company. And my company's name is MIDEGO. The name -- I chose this name almost 8 years ago because I believe in the millennium development goals. You may have heard me and my dear colleague, Dr Murthy -- Mini in a show. We have also on Blog Talk Radio and African Views called Millennium Development Goals. The Millennium Development Goals are 8 goals that for the first time, mankind set to make health a priority and I am very excited to see that in many ways in the last 12 years since Millennium Development Goals were accepted by the United Nations Assembly. It is a very big progress and things are getting better. So there is a lot to be done and there's still a lot to be improved, but I really believe that we are on the right track. That's why I really believe so much in the Millennium Development Goals that I decided to choose the first two letters of the words of Millennium Development Goals and make that the name of my company because of I wanted to dedicate the best of my career to really help other health professionals to do all they can, give all of their talent and really have a very fulfilling career by making such a big difference that we not only achieve the Millennium Development Goals and the targets that were set for 2012 but we also go beyond 2015 and we really bring health for all now to everybody, everywhere, everyday.
I believe that as many of you, I'm sure, that health, like education, work, safety are human rights. And if you ever read international declaration, Universal Declaration of Human Rights you know what I'm talking about, if not, I think it's a very good read and I suggest you do. If you wanna know more about that just email me at email@example.com and I'll be happy to send you a copy and be happy to talk more about it the next time. So if you believe that everybody no matter where they live, where they were born, where they happened to be at this time, has the same rights as you and me to have a healthy life and have a healthy family, have a healthy child and see them grow healthy to develop into human being that are fulfilling their potential, then let's make it happen. And thank you, if we are in such a wonderful time where we have the technology, we have the knowledge to make it happen, we just really need to spread the tools, the knowledge and experience that others can do too and then take their life in this planet to the next level. We have all seen science fiction movies, Star Trek and other movies and we have all imagined what the future would be like. So imagine the future where we see any city in the world where there are health centers in every neighborhood, even in the US because we do that too. We can have a health center or clinic in every neighborhood, there are basic family health care or family can go to the United Children, the elderly can go check their medication, they are staying active and staying healthy and get advice on how to continue staying healthy and active and living a long life and that is my vision.
So if you have this vision, I encourage you to join me every Friday, so we can really talk about how to make it happen. I believe that there is a future in public health. There is a future in providing the right quality care everywhere, everyday and we can make it happen. It's very easy, if you are determined to do it. So please join me every Friday and we will talk more about these issues and we'll develop more solutions to make it happen. How to make it happen? Well I believe that there are three main steps that I have developed in my life and I'm going to share that with you, I'm not gonna hold anything back in this show and my mission is to really make it happen and I am very, very fortunate to have Blog Talk Radio and make this my way of disseminating them and starting anew. There are three main things that we need to do be aware of. First, you have to be very strong about your mission. My mission is to really make this happen and I believe in Millennium Development Goals and I believe in public health. And I believe in human rights and the right to health. So for that reason, my mission is something that is non-negotiable and that I go for everyday and that really energizes me and they make me very happy and very humble at the same time to have been somehow chosen to fulfill this and I'm not alone.
There are many other people that really want to contribute to this. So I think we can now work together and join in our mission. We can cooperate, coordinate and all starts with communication. So if we communicate and we share our vision, then we can collaborate, we can really make it happen, that's the first step. The second step is putting systems in place and system is what makes it work as if were on autopilot. So it works everyday, everywhere, by everybody and I believe the systems is the way to think about the health services because when you have systems work, maybe we can avoid errors. Every time a child is not being immunized, every time a mother visits the antenatal healthcare visit or every time somebody does not know how to prevent AIDS or TB or how to get treatment or trachoma or for other diseases. And if there is an error, a missed opportunity that we need to correct so it never ever, ever, ever happens again and if we all put the right systems in place, we can avoid errors and we can avoid wasting resources which are still now are very, very limited everywhere, because now we're more aware of that.
And then third, we need to speak and share the results, the good ones and the bad ones. We learn more from our mistake sometimes and from our successes we need to share them both. So I hope that we all can share what has worked, what has not worked as what can we do now to move forward. What is past is past, the future has not happened yet, so let's talk about what we can do now that's why my main message is health for all now, why can we do now, there is no other way. We only can control now, the present, so let's make it happen and with that message, I wanna leave you to think more about it and let us know how we can help you. We'd love to hear your comments and questions about the show and I hope that next week, you all join us again and we will hear more about your work and start a conversation. This has been the Blog Talk Radio show and I am very excited to be here and I hope you got a lesson and the recording will be out there and I look forward to talking with you all and a very successful program. Make your mission happen. Put your systems in place and go speak up. Bye bye, see you next time.
