Sometimes the only way to escape stress is to venture within oneself. Meditation is a practice in which an individual trains the mind to promote relaxation; an inward escape. It consists of self-regulation practices that focus to bring mental processes under greater voluntary control.  Meditation has been shown to improve psychological balance, help cope with illnesses and enhance overall health and well-being. Meditation has been practiced since antiquity.

Religions of the world have a tradition of using prayer beads as tools in devotional meditation. Christian rosaries consist of pearls or beads linked together by a thread. The beads provide a counting method for the person who recites a prayer or mantra to focus.  In the Sikh religion, singing is used to become focused. Chinese Qigong uses visualization to concentrate flows of energy (Qi) in the body.

Over the past 20 years, mindfulness-based programs have become important to the medical community as a means of helping people. Biofeedback is a process that enables an individual to learn how to change physiological activity for the purposes of improving health and performance, change emotions and behavior. Achieving focused attention is aided by electronic equipment. Biofeedback is effective for the treatment of headaches, anxiety and chronic pain.
