The 13th amendment (1865) freed slaves throughout the United States. It confirmed the Emancipation Proclamation (1863) that had pronounced slaves free in the Confederate states. The thirteenth amendment to the US Constitution abolished slavery and all other forms of involuntary servitude, excluding involuntary labor as punishment for a crime. 13th is a 2016 American documentary by director Ava DuVernay. The film explores the "intersection of race, justice and mass incarceration in the United States;"[3] it is titled after the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which freed the slaves and prohibited slavery (unless as punishment for a crime).
