Offence is severe because we have expectations of the person that they will not/never be able to produce.


1 Peter 5:5-11 NKJV
5  ... "GOD RESISTS THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE."
7  casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.
8  Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
9  Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.

(12)  For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it: neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him:
(13)  But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance.
