The Empowerment Hour Online University with Kermit Eady & Earnest Mcbride The Empowerment Hour Online University this Week "Tariq Beard is widely considered to be the pre-eminent collector of 18th-20th Century African American decorative arts, photography, rare books, unique documents, and other objects of aesthetic and historic interest. An example of a very significant piece from his collections...is the manuscript of the autobiography of Amar Ibn Said (dating from 1831 on a North Carolina plantation). It is the only extant autobiography in Arabic by an enslaved Sub-Saharan African in America. Beard has become known nationwide for his study of "Drapetomania," the spurious disease that was characteristic of runaway slaves. The name was concocted by a white doctor who purported to give a scientific explanation of why black men and women ran away from slavery. Please set aside the time for this powerful episode and bring your family to the Online University this Saturday evening.
