"Tariq Beard is widely considered to be the pre-eminent collector of 18th-20th Century African American decorative arts, photography, rare books, unique documents, and other objects of aesthetic and historic interest. An example of a very significant piece from his collections...is the manuscript of the autobiography of Amar Ibn Said (dating from 1831 on a North Carolina plantation). It is the only extant autobiography in Arabic by an enslaved Sub-Saharan African in America.
Beard has become known nationwide for his study of "Drapetomania," the spurious disease that was characteristic of runaway slaves. The name was concocted by a white doctor who purported to give a scientific explanation of why black men and women ran away from slavery.
