What happens when there is a disruption to a child's family and community? As a consequence, children who experience a family disruption could face a heightened risk of unemployment and social exclusion later in the life course. If most of the effects were contained at higher educational levels, the life course consequences might be less severe.

Despite the rapid and dramatic changes in the American family structure over the past 25 years, consumer researchers have largely neglected how these alternative family forms influence consumer behavior. As a preliminary inquiry into this area, we present an exploratory study which examines the relationship between family disruption and the presence of materialistic attitudes and compulsive consumption behavior among young adults reared in intact versus disrupted family forms.
