In the world of the arts, certain things are a must, yes they are as important as breathing air to live.  
I have met many writers, publishers,  and other artists as well as an organization who never stop thinking of ways to promote or advertise when it comes to promotions of their projects.

Sure in the old day's word of mouth was a key factor, now it takes more promotion to reach a massive audience and even then you will have to promote even more and stay on the promotions grind.
In fact most of your budget to just stay in the game will go toward promotion, and as you grow, advertising will become a large part of your marketing strategies. So take your hat off to those who understand repetition is key. but even with the use of that word there is still no guarantee. The only thing that is a sure thing, or a promise, is that you have to work hard just to be in the game and even then your worth is always measured by your hard work.
