Where is “Little Egypt”? Some of our listeners may know the region as home of the SIU Salukis, the nationally recognized public research university. Affectionately known as “Little Egypt”, the beautiful Illinois region is geographically, culturally, and economically very different from the rest of the state. The fertile, scenic region is nestled in the Shawnee National Forest and is surrounded on three out of four sides by the Ohio and Wabash rivers to the east and south, and the Mississippi River to the west. Jackson County, Illinois thrives in “Little Egypt” is home for citizens who enjoy an exceptional lifestyle with access to university amenities typically found in urban areas, and the relaxed elements provided by the great outdoors minutes from any doorstep. Regardless of the region, across the United States, rural communities are seeking ways to cultivate and sustain business growth, especially during our challenging economic conditions. The Jackson Growth Alliance is a cooperative effort between government, university and business leaders in Jackson County, Illinois to promote and encourage economic and community development.
