Stress refers to running a system at a level beyond where it was meant to operate. We did not evolve to lead the lives most of us lead- lives of sugar-laden diets, late nights with incandescent lights, constant anxiety about work, poor sleep, poor nutrition and exposure to hundreds of toxic chemicals. We evolved to handle intermittent stress, not this constant stress.
