Hildegard Behrens 1937-2009 Her Life Affirming Art One of the best memories of my life was when I attended a performance of “Elektra” at the Metropolitan Opera with Hildegard Behrens in the title role. The opera is performed in one act with no intermissions, each note building to the amazing dramatic ending where Elektra, in sheer redemptive bliss drops dead. Ms. Behrens not only embodied that sentiment with her acting which immersed herself fully as the tragic heroine and voice that was a beacon of sound perfect for Strauss, but with a physical stamina of a decathalete as well. For as the Met Opera Orchestra boomed the triumphant chords reflecting Elektra’s ecstatic joy upon hearing of the death of her mother, Hildy lost all abandon and proceeded to use every part of her body as she stomped into a Victory Dance that was so demanding and COMMITTED, one could see how with each blissful stomp Elektra would sacrifice a beat of her living soul, rendering her lifeless on the very last note. The Met, being THE greatest stage on the globe, like every opera they perform had their massive golden curtain close to completion with the exact same precision as Maestro Levine was conducting the final beat of the opera and remarkably as Hildegard literally threw herself down on the ground in a heap that had completely expired with not a breath left in it. The entire audience was so completely overwhelmed by this fusion of Greek tragedy, sublime singing and hyper realistic acting that there was not a sound when the curtain finally closed. And the audience was still taking in everything they had witnessed with this display of artistic mastery when the curtain went up with another pause of silence, and a single spotlight proceeded to shine on Ms. Behrens who stood on the massive stage, alone. Another pause. I must add that I was very close to the stage on the far left hand side of the theater. After the delayed pause with the audience finally realizing that not only had a spotlight gone on but that one of the greatest interpreters of “Elektra” was before us, there was a ROAR of sound made by hundreds of people regaining their knowledge of where they were along with what had happened and they began to howlingly scream and applaud as if desperate to make up for lost time. This delayed reaction must have come down on Ms. Behrens like a stimulus of blaring shock because from my viewpoint, I literally saw her wince and jolt backwards. She was literally taken aback and was not expecting the audience to so fiercely show their thanks and pleasure to her on such a primal level! The din remained consistently strong in volume for at least the next 4 minutes, which in applause time is seemingly never ending. Ms. Behrens smiled, bowed and when there showed no signs of the audience decreasing their frenzied pitch of praise for her, the great soprano lowered her head and when she lifted her visage back to the audience to display that ever beaming smile which in itself was famous, there were tears streaming down her face. She cried tears of uncontrollable joy which made me, in turn, involuntarily weep while applauding as hard as I could and cheering with all my vocal might! I truly felt human during those glorious moments. As a member of that performance’s audience, we were acknowledging Art itself and that moments such as these are the things that make us write poetry, sing operas, and believe in God. Perpetual light shine upon you Hildegard, and I thank you very deeply for giving me that precious gift in time that I will carry with me as one of my most treasured possessions.

…And Justice for All
(could this actually be?)
Ruminations as Saturn Enters
Its Exaltation
JUSTICE.
Powerful word, don’t you think? Most people when they hear that word assume it to be in the positive spectrum so that the word confers an atmosphere of wholesome goodness. In the Tarot, the card of Justice represents utter neutrality and I try to hold the reigns in when upon seeing that card in a reading, a client will begin doing the Showcase Showdown bounce as if they had won everything on The Price is Right. I immediately put that to an end when I look straight ahead of me as if now I, too, had been blinded with god like neutral wisdom and say in my best Oracle seeing- through-time voice:
“Not so fast Speedy Gonzalez. In actuality, the card of Justice means YOU ARE GETTING WHAT YOU DESERVE.”
The mythological origins of the goddess Justicia vary in derivation as her statuary does in tunics, sandals and swords. The Romans had more control over their spritely clean teen girl of goody goody than the Greeks did. Hmmm could that be in part due to the fact that the Romans devised and created the origins of the Justice System as we know it today? The Greeks vascillated over Justice being Zeus’ little girl who although mortal was always seen by his side, and who would rather DIE than walk around with a blindfold on! Speaking of - Whose genius idea was it anyway to have a “barely legal” daughter of the Head Honcho of Heaven walk around with a blindfold covering her eyes so that she would be completely unaware of who she was clobbering or impaling with one hand swinging those scales and the other holding a dual edged sword!
Although fully robed (you think Hera would let her leave Mt. Olympus wearing whore make up and outfits made of dental floss like those girls at the mall?) Justice is comprised of idealized beauty and virginal purity that accompanies this archetype who represents sound, moral judgement. And despite the fact that the moment the Queen of the Gods is out of eye shot, Little Lady Justice tosses the robage in the back seat of the chariot while adjusting her super mini tunic AND applying whore make up AND driving her chariot at the same time, how does virginal purity which implies naivete and innocence add up to the moral wisdom required for true Justice to prevail?
Enter Saturn in Libra, as it so happens, on this very day!
Along with never being seen on her own, Justice had a gaggle of sisters as well, and often she was thrown into their girl’s club known as the Horae, and not because they all overdid that cheap ghastly Greek make up. The Horae were the idealized “hours” which implied that not only was Justice cute and perky, but like her TV BFF counterparts Gidget or Sandra Dee would just simply show up at the very moment or for a better term hour of need!
Isn’t that fun of her?!! (scrunching nose and giggling).
It is not only in the modern day but throughout art and history that when Justice is called upon, or to be more timely, when Justice is “Demanded” it’s almost always not because the jukebox broke and those tuniced kids don’t know what to Mashed Potatoe to next, it’s a very visceral human reaction usually to events that have gotten completely out of control or where the din of chaos is so booming that only screaming for her presence will suffice.)
Which leads us to this very day people. Today Saturn enters the sign of its exaltation, the scales of Libra! When a planet is in its exaltation, it is placed in the sign considered to be the best match for or optimal environment for its energies to work their smoothest or best. There are many separate reasons why Saturn, the “Lord of Karma” and the “Great Malefic” function best in Libra, but from what has been relayed from the origins and representations of the mythological Justice; Justice shall prevail in the face of sound and morally upright decisions and these can only come from the time honored toil of earning wisdom through our hardships, labors, and mistakes and not from an idealized and naïve sense of perky good timing. With Saturn, the god of hardship, labor, challenges, time and wisdom entering Libra, the sign of truth, balance, harmony and impartiality for the next 2 ½ years, we as a society have a window of opportunity to alter a number of things that have eroded in the legal and justice systems, giving us one of the best chances to get as close as we can to embodying the phrase: And Justice For All!
I am hoping that over these next few years, sweeping reforms and constructive changes will occur on every level of status and person in our legal and justice systems but also within our military as well – (never forget during a Saturn transit, Saturn affects the sign it is in but also its polar opposite as well. Libra’s polar opposite is Aries, a sign ruled by Mars, a planet which rules the military.)
Saturn’s rulership includes the tangible structure of things such as buildings or departments as well as the administrative detail needed to run these things. If Saturn deems something worthy to focus his labors on, he does so only if the end results are tangible for all to see.
May we see concrete proof that our world has changed for the better after applying long overdue reforms and imposing alterations which will sweep through and cleanse every level and status of department and personnel – from our disgracefully overcrowded prisons, our horrifyingly corrupt lawyers and law firms, to the highest levels of military brass and revered judges who are placed at the pinnacles of the Pentagon and the Supreme Court itself!
That’s what Saturn in Libra is all about, Charlie Brown.

The Shearing of the Soul:
The Scorpionic Symbolism of Halloween
One need not be a chamber to be haunted;
One need not be a house;
The brain has corridors surpassing material place.
- Emily Dickinson
I wander through your sadness.
Gazing at you through Scorpion eyes,
Halloween! Halloween!
- Siouxsie and the Banshees, “Halloween”
Deep into the darkness peering,
Long I stood there, wondering, fearing,
Doubting,
Dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before.
-Edgar Allan Poe, “The Raven”
Anything regarding Halloween fascinates me. The time of year, the imagery, the universal rituals….the fact that in this modern technological age, we as human beings behave with an almost instinctual reverence to that which has died, that which is unknown, and to that which cannot be seen but felt to exist.
A reverence that is truly ancient and is a part of our genetic composition as living persons on this planet, no matter what era of time.
I was recently criticized by a relative that most people would not be as “into” Halloween as myself and that may very well be the case. After giving it some thought, I determined the cause for this perpetual wonder within me that springs anew come every October: my astrological naivete. I was not born a Scorpio.
The astrological season for the sign of Scorpio occurs from October 23rd through November 21st and just as ancient man from his onset devised the zodiac and its ancient categorization of its 12 signs, so too does our ancient holiday of reverence to the dead occur within the time period assigned to the sign concerned with death and transformative rebirth. October 31st is Scorpionic in every way.
Let’s face it, there may be a lot of “fun” assigned to Halloween with gag costumes and activities centered around young kiddies, but just like the Scorpios we know and love, this holiday is INTENSE and HARDCORE. It is a holiday that deals with:
- Nighttime (The Sun MUST set first before the revelries begin)
- Ransom (How else would you categorize a command like “Trick or Treat!”)
- Terror or Fright (“Whoever has the scariest costume wins the Halloween Grand Prize!!”)
- The Recognition of Death Itself (or in other words, The Horror Film)
- The Recognition of Those who have Died (The predominant imagery of Halloween are gravestones, skeletons, and ghosts)
- The Recognition of Forces of Power usually unseen by Mortals (Witches and Witchcraft, Demonic Forces and The Devil himself
- The Recognition of Our Own Mortality (The Jack-o-Lantern)
All of these bullet points can also be likened to the various layers that shroud the intensely bright glow of the Scorpio’s soul.
Stephen Arroyo in his brilliant book, “Astrology, Karma, and Transformation” sums up Halloween in a purely Scorpionic light:
“The Scorpio period of the year (at least in the Northern Hemisphere) is the time when the life force withdraws from all outer forms in nature and is concentrated in the seed….It is significant that children are allowed at this time to wander out at night, past their usual bed time, and that they are not supposed to go from house to house begging for food until the Sun (the symbol of physical life) has completely set! Indeed, Scorpionic and Plutonian people seem to have an affinity for the dark areas of experience, whether in a constructive way or through fear mingled with fascination.”
Let’s take that same bullet list and now apply it to the Scorpionic personality:
Nighttime: This is the sign that truly loves the night in every way. Many Scorpios will attest to the fact that they do their best work/thinking/creating in the dark hours. The typical Scorpio loves also being covered in the night or in other words, they love being seen or perceived as MYSTERIOUS! One of the worst things you can do with a Scorpio you do not know well is to get too personal with them too fast! Any shards of light (personal insight or knowledge about them) that pierce their sense of night will be a guarantee that you will now NEVER get to know that Scorpio for good!
Ransom: The polar opposite sign of Scorpio is Taurus, an earthy sign that gets security from whatever material possessions they own. Scorpio is a watery or emotionally based sign, so even though they “feel” first before anything else and feel quite intensely, they borrow their Taurean opposition of having a tendency to treat those who they have emotional investments with almost as if they were their property or material assets. Add to that fact, the planet that rules Scorpio is Pluto, the planet of power and control, this sign is very very well versed in playing power games and using emotional weapons such as guilt, desire, and security as their ransom to gain overall victory and control!
Terror or Fright: Scorpios have an INNATE awareness of the darkest depths of human behavior, and here is where my self description of being “astrologically naïve” should make complete sense. There have been too many occasions, whether it be from watching a psychological thriller film or “cold case” or CSI documentary with a Scorpio where on one side there will be me, utterly HORRIFIED because I had NEVER considered such gruesome acts that one human being can inflict on another…..On the other side there will be the Scorpio, mildly annoyed and surprised that I had never considered such things. The same Scorpio who then, off the top of their head, will ADD to the situation things even MORE twisted and disturbing, leaving me twitching and lying fetal in a silent scream.
The Recognition of Death Itself: People, if you have a death, whether it be of a loved one or of a cherished pet – call a Scorpio. This sign’s natural sector of life, or house, is the 8th house of death making every Scorpio aware of death from birth, so they naturally can face, handle, and deal with the force that removes Life; whether it be escorting you to identify a body or helping you bury your beloved Mrs. Meow Meow.
The Recognition of Those Who Have Died: The water signs at large (Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces) are adept at being naturally intuitive or psychic. Oddly enough, most Scorpios wouldn’t necessarily consider or call themselves psychic. From my observation, the natural intuitiveness of the Scorpio comes to surface for the most part with issues dealing with the dead; from simply “knowing” the exact moment that a loved one has just passed to having detailed dreams of those same loved ones after their passing which many times is direct communication from the dead to them.
The Recognition of Forces of Power usually unseen by Mortals: Here again, I must refer to my “astrological naivete” for during the course of my discoveries on this earth in this current life cycle, I have been made aware of forces ranging from those of the dead who either cling to this plane with a powerful fury or of those who are not aware they have passed on, to the forces of higher beings ranging from the powerful purity of angels and seraphim, to the soul annihilating anti-power of the demonic, and with each awesome discovery I am left dumbfounded, the Scorpios that I know and love are moved, but from a place that is inherently aware of these terrible and terrific things!
The Recognition of Our Own Mortality: I’ll leave you ghosts and ghouls with another quote from the great Stephen Arroyo along with an image that began this tale of deepest intrigue:
“It is striking that the cultural symbol for this time of year in the United States is the Halloween pumpkin with its insides removed, leaving only an empty shell with a blankly staring face. In fact, the jack-o-lantern is a symbol of death, a symbolic skull with the glimmering remains of the departed life force represented by the candle within it.”
MAY ALL OUR LIFE FORCES SHINE THEIR BRIGHTEST THIS
MAGICAL TIME OF YEAR &
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
Dedicated to my dear Scorpios and Scorpio Risings that are of the living and the dead: Rick, Eva, and Douglas
