This is Author’s Beat, sponsored by The Writers League of the Villages in central Florida. The program is hosted by award-winning author Mark H. Newhouse and was created by prize-winning national journalist Don Canaan and Mark Newhouse.

In the past we have concentrated on books that are primarily text--fiction and non-fiction--but this program will highlight books that are even more complicated to write--one that incorporate both text and illustrations. Our guests are author-illustrators Allenita C. Cooks and Charlene Anne Meeker.

For many years, Allennita Cooks worked with children both as a teacher and storyteller. She has written skits, poems and stories since her teen years that have been utilized by schools and churches. Allennita nurtures her passion for writing  with her book The Grandfather Tree, which she both wrote and illustrated.

Charlene Meeker's  Cookies in Heaven is a true story of a grandfather and granddaughter's relationship - Papa Claude and four year old Lindsey. When a challenge presents itself, Lindsey decides to do something about it. Its a story of hope and love that families share, and will bring a smile at its conclusion.
