Maria Iliou is Dickens' Character ... Performing in character in Scrooge Play: as poor woman as character role has changed to poor Husband 

Charles Dickens , gave the Tailor names: { Husband name is }  Samuel Wilkins 

{ his wife }  Caroline Wilkins. 

Samuel and Caroline Wilkins are poor and deeply in debt to scrooge : says in script. } Samuel is a tailor, Caroline works in clothier trade. Caroline works 7 days a week , 12 hours day with out any breaks as laundress. { woman cleans people's clothes for small fee.}

Samuel Wilkins owes Scrooge 20 pounds, because Samuel borrowed from Scrooge   to buy rather new invention a modern sewing machine { patented and mass marketed in England in 1844 } 

Scrooge is threatening to have Samuel put into prison for unable to pay his debt { debtors prison was common for people in England and is common topic in Dickens' stories " The Sewing Machine did not improve business as much as you and Samuel needed and so Samuel going to prison would put you both into financial ruin.
