4 A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed.              (Matt  16:4) When I was preaching in Philadelphia, a Quaker called out for a sign. I told him to be still. After the sermon, he again asked for a sign. I told the congregation the man was an adulterer; that a wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and that the Lord had said to me in a revelation, that any man who wanted a sign was an adulterous person. "It is true," cried one, "for I caught him in the very act," which the man afterwards confessed, when he was baptized. (HC 5:268.)                (Joseph Smith, Discourses of the Prophet Joseph Smith, compiled by Alma P. Burton, p.219) I told of an incident in 1971 at Ft. Sam Houston, on guard duty, when an audible voice of great power spoke and my companion on gaurd duty, dropped his baton and fled, thus deserting his post, and was not converted by the display.  Also tells of a man who said "if you can tell me what my problem is, I will 'join your church'", whereupon he was reproved for seeking a sign that he might believe, and the Holy Ghost immediately revealed to me the man was a sodomite which I reported to his face, and who had performed the act in view of the apartment court complex in a window the previous night.  He did not repent and did not fulfill his promise, though he would have been rejected for baptism as being foul and unworthy.  So signs do not convert.  Pharoah was not coverted by signs but watched his army drown in the Red Sea.
