Growing up as a child I was always told that to survive in society, you need a college degree. I believe that was true in prior generations when the United States was part of the industrial revolution. There is proof that a college degree is not needed to become a powerful business person. If you don't believe me, take strong look at Steve Jobs, Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg. An academic education is critical in some fields such as science, technology, engineeering, math, medical, education, and law. In other fields such as gender, racial, and LGBTQ studies along with social science, a college degree would be useless because there is no market for that academic credential. To be successful in the world, there are paths such as vocational trades and military. College was set up by the powerful white establishment to keep certain groups out of the work place. When you earn a college degree these days, you will end up working for someone else and be saddled with debt.
