The Lord is our Shepherd and we are His Sheep.

When David wrote the 23 Psalms he wrote it from his own experience because his earlier years were spent caring for sheep as a shepherd.  When he wrote the 23 Psalms he used what he knew to be true and used it to express how he felt.  Remember the bible was written by man but inspired by God. God inspired David to use the analogy of a shepherd and his sheep to write the 23 Psalm and He knew that David would be able to express, describe, and write a correct illustration of the relationship between a Shepherd and his sheep in great details.   Psalm 23 is the most read, quoted, memorized, and though after passages of scripture.  God never ask us to do things that he knew we would not able to do, or accomplish.  God uses things in the natural to explain the spiritual, so that we can get a good understand of what He wants to reveal to us. God is using the analogy of a Shepherd and his sheep.  An analogy is a comparison based on similarities; it shows likeness between people, places or things.  When we accepted Christ as our Lord, Savior and Master He became our Shepherd and we became His sheep.
