In the comics, M'baku(head of Jabaari tribe), is one of Wakanda's greatest warriors, second only to the Black Panther, and belongs to the White Gorilla Tribe. He's a Human Mutate. He gains his powers by killing a white gorilla, bathing in its blood, and eating its flesh, taking the alias of Man-Ape or White Gorilla. M'Baku, While not called "Man-Ape", he is leader of the renegade Jabari Tribe who have a religious reverence for gorillas (revering the monkey god, Hanuman), Hanuman is a manifestation (avatar) of the Hindu god SIVA The Destroyer .MARVEL has done something like this. MARVEL borrowed mythological elements from all over the world (Thor and the Asgardians - Norse, Bast or Panther Goddess - Egyptian .the monkey warrior who appears in the epic Hindu tale Ramayana (5th to 4th century BCE).
