Fetishes, opening a door to adventure or pushing the envelope?

Most people wont admit to having a fetish. Is this because they're ashamed? In a relationship, some feel the need to fulfill those needs with someone outside. Why? Does admitting to and engaging in this activity open the door to trying different things and spicing the bedroom scene up? Or is it exposing the individual to possible judgment and ridicule?
